Artist Spotlight- Brian Kimani.

Brian Kimani is a Nairobi-based visual artist who began his practice in 2019 after completing high school. Formerly working from the Mukuru Art Collective in South B, he now develops his practice independently, building a distinctive visual language rooted in movement, transport, and shifting geographies—ideas shaped by a childhood marked by frequent relocation.

Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Kimani explores both daylight and nocturnal atmospheres, using negative space, colour contrast, and the interplay of light and shadow to create depth and emotional intensity. His work reflects on sociopolitical realities as well as the impact of infrastructure and locomotion on everyday urban life.

His paintings often hold a sense of lived immediacy—capturing people and places in transition, where culture unfolds in motion rather than stillness. He has exhibited locally and internationally, including a multi-city tour across Germany and Austria with a Kenyan artists’ collective.
