DHARSHIE PHOTOGRAPHY -ARTIST SPOTLIGHT.

Frederick Dharshie
Frederick Dharshie is an award-winning, self-taught environmental and humanitarian photojournalist based in Nairobi, Kenya. His work focuses on global stories around food and water insecurity, the climate crisis, and humanitarian issues — particularly women’s empowerment.
By combining his deep interest in humankind with his passion for the natural world, Dharshie seeks to educate, create awareness, and inspire action through his imagery.
In 2019, his photograph “A young boy drinks dirty water in Kakamega, Kenya” earned him the CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year Award, announced at the UN Climate Summit in New York. He also received the Best Locomotive Photo and People’s Choice Award in the 2017 China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) Photography Competition, celebrating the completion of the Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Dharshie has served as a judge for the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Environmental Photography Award (2021 & 2022) and now sits on its Honorary Committee. His work has been exhibited globally, including at the Open Eye Gallery’s LOOK Climate Lab in Liverpool, UK, for his collection On The Ground: The Story of Trans-Nzoia Through the Trees — a study created during his residency with the Open Eye Gallery and the National Museums of Western Kenya.
He has been featured in Forbes, The Guardian, The Sun, National Geographic, and The New York Times, with coverage spanning Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Community Impact
Beyond his art, Dharshie continues to use his lens to highlight stories of resilience and hope. His ongoing Samburu Charity Drive (13th–16th November 2025) supports women and families across northern Kenya facing water scarcity and hardship.
