Messob Basket Harari, Ethiopia
An exceptional vintage Mesob basket from the historic Harar region of Ethiopia, showcasing the distinctive artistry of Harari women. This piece features precise geometric patterning—zigzags, triangles, and balanced symmetrical forms—woven in vibrant tones of red, green, and natural beige. The colours are achieved through natural dyes, a hallmark of traditional Harari basketry. Crafted from three types of locally sourced grasses—migir, agargara, and qarma—each fibre is selected, dried, and coiled with meticulous skill. Messob baskets have long served as functional vessels, markers of identity, and ceremonial gifts, making them central to Harari cultural life. This basket comes from a UK collection belonging to a former owner who lived in Ethiopia for many years before returning to the United Kingdom. It was well‑loved and carefully kept, preserving its colour, structure, and cultural integrity.
