Messob Basket Harari, Ethiopia

An exquisite Messob basket from the Harar region of Ethiopia, skillfully crafted in the traditional Harari style. Its intricate geometric patterns feature alternating zigzags and triangular designs, highlighted by vibrant colors of red, green, and natural beige. These striking hues and symmetrical patterns showcase the artistry and cultural heritage of Harari women, who meticulously created these baskets. Traditionally, the baskets were used for serving food, symbolizing identity, and as gifts or decorative pieces. Harari basketry is made from three types of dried grasses—migir, agargara, and qarma—sourced from specific plants and dyed naturally. This basket, dating back to the late 20th century, originates from a UK collection and measures H 50 cm x W 30 cm.
